Chinatown Auxiliary
By Zijun Cathy You
PREMIERING MONDAY, MAY 13 at 9/8c
For decades, a group of Chinese residents, now grandpas and grandmas, have patrolled the streets of Manhattan's Chinatown as NYPD volunteer police while fighting to find belonging in a country that felt foreign and unwelcoming to them. Patrolling in NYPD Auxiliary uniform is their way of protecting the few blocks they call home and assimilate into the mainstream. From the savage tribulation in the '70s to “Asian Hate” during the COVID-19 pandemic, these stories remind us of the hope the U.S. represented to the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses yearning to belong.
